News in brief

Child drug runners

More than 4,000 children in London alone may be involved in ‘county lines’, where teenagers are turned into drug runners, sometimes travelling hundreds of miles a week across Britain. School age children in care have been specifically targeted by criminal gangs, who offer them drugs and money, according to a BBC radio report.

The Children’s Society has resources available for those who fear their children may be involved.

Robberies rising

With 8 in 10 Britons using smartphones, higher than in any other nation, more are being stolen. Robberies are increasing faster than in any other developed country.

Cashless society is nearly here

Cash has fallen to third place for shoppers. Only 40% of retail purchases are bought with cash; in 2013 it was 60%.
