The Welsh government announced on 22 January that parents will no longer be able to remove their children from sex or religious education.

Welsh children from the age of five will be taught RE and Relationships and Sexuality Education (RSE) regardless of their parents’ wishes. The move will be tested next year before becoming statutory when the new curriculum is launched in 2022.

John Denning, education officer for the Christian Institute, said: “I think it is an assault on the freedom of the parents to make sure that their children are brought up with the values that they hold, which is protected in the European Convention on Human Rights.”
