Farmers’ fields “shouldn’t be taken”

by Andrew Holloway

“Inheritance tax isn’t biblical”, according to Christian Voice Director Stephen Green in a short video released as farmers were going to London in November to lobby the Government over the Chancellor’s planned inheritance tax increase. According to the prophet Micah in the Bible, taking a man’s inheritance is a grave sin:

“They covet fields and take them by violence, Also houses, and seize them. So they oppress a man and his house, A man and his inheritance” (Micah 2:2)

Inheritance Tax as we know it was introduced by Margaret Thatcher’s government in 1986. According to the site www.inheritanceissues.co.uk, “it can be identified as a Thatcherite policy by the neat way in which it allows so many people to avoid paying at least part of the tax – the Conservative Party was a party of low taxation in death as in life, something which met with opposition from left wingers who felt that the wealth of the rich was unduly protected by the Conservatives, while the poor were excluded from that wealth”.
