A successful salesman, affable Bruce Barker provided the good life for his wife Ann and family. “We went to church now and then and gave God a nod. We had a big house and a cottage, expensive cars and lived the life,” he explains.
Then one day Bruce collapsed in terrific pain. After a long series of X-rays, the doctor phoned Ann and told her there were lumps on his kidneys and that he only had a few weeks to live. They could do no more for him.
A STORRINGTON JOURNALIST has been helping reporters defend democracy in Iraq.
Andrew Boyd, a freelance journalist who reports from the world’s trouble spots and trains journalists, spent four days teaching the Iraqis how to cover their elections even-handedly.
“Even though Iraq is now free from Saddam’s dictatorship, it is still one of the most dangerous places in the world to be a journalist,” says Andrew. “Many reporters are killed there each year.
“We couldn’t meet in Baghdad as the security risk was too high, so we did the training in Erbil, Kurdistan, which is safer.”
Three women came to me separately one morning and each said, “Go and get the URC building. God’s given it to you.”
I replied, “Well, God ain’t told me!”
Last time we met former armed robber Michael Johnson, he was feeding the homeless out of a café. Now Carole Woodiwis visits him in his ministry’s new home.
TWO YEARS AGO, when Michael Johnson was wondering, as ever, how he was going to feed the hundreds of homeless who rely on him each week, three ladies from different prayer groups and churches came to see him, separately, on the same Tuesday morning. Each one said, “Go and get the URC building, God has given it to you.”
Michael laughed at them and said, “‘Well, God ain’t told me!”
